How to Organically Grow Your Instagram (It’s Easier Than You Think)

Table of Contents
In the era of the influencer, Instagram and social media in general can feel a bit intimidating, especially when you throw digital marketing in the mix. You post content, but are met with little to no followers or engagement, left wondering where you went wrong. We’re here to let you in on a little secret, growing your Instagram is easier than you think! And we’ll show you the ropes with these five helpful hints.

How to Organically Grow Your Instagram – Bring It Back To The Basics:

Before we get into the nitty-gritty of growing your follower base, let’s start with humanizing your brand. Something as small as adding a bio to your profile really helps form the foundation of your brand identity. Image captions, a proper username and a profile picture lets consumers know your brand is credible. The link in your bio is your one spot to drive Instagram traffic to your site, so optimizing your account profile is essential. A great phrase to remember is one you probably heard a lot growing up: “keep it simple, stupid.” Keeping your username as search friendly as possible is key. Stay close to your actual business name, and avoid special characters and numbers. If your business name is longer, shorten it to something your audience would recognize. No one wants to follow or engage with “user43975.”

Parallel Your Content Across Platforms

Much like the content being pushed out in other marketing channels (newsletters, emails, etc.), you’ll want to schedule and keep a consistent content calendar for your Instagram as well. This includes:
  • Scheduling posts

Gmail really did some of their best work when they created the email schedule send option. Luckily, Instagram caught on as well. There’s an option to schedule a post in advance through HubSpot (which Soulheart happens to be experts in). In other words, you can upload your content, choose when it goes live on Instagram, and know that it will be posted for your audience without you having to lift a finger. Consumers go crazy for consistency!
  • Timing your posts

It sounds silly, but there are good times to post on Instagram, and there are bad. Some of the worst things you can do when trying to gain followers are to post at random times of the day or post too much. Brands shouldn’t post more than a few times a day to avoid spam, but whatever your cadence is, keep it consistent. 200 million Instagram users log on daily, so sticking to a schedule helps build trust and consistency for your followers and brand.

Stop, Collaborate and Listen

Vanilla Ice said it best. Partner and collaborate with other brands, organizations and people. Take a page out of Jaeda Webster’s book, Soulheart’s very own IG queen:
I grew a new account organically to over 5k in under 5 months by one major mindset shift – instead of fighting the algorithm, work with it.  We’ve all heard it before – “the algorithm is killing my engagement!” But realistically, Instagram has tweaked and tweaked their algorithm to ultimately connect creators with their niche audience. They’re a business after all, and the more people spend time on their app, the more their business thrives. The algorithm tends to favor creators that do the following things because they contribute toward content consumption:
  • Posts consistently; the more you post, the more content you are offering to your audience.
  • Posts engaging information – think educational or entertaining; keeps people coming back for more info.
  • Use new features – REELS REELS REELS! Instagram is trying to compete with TikTok and really push into the short-form video market. (TIP: this is also your best bet at finding new audiences since reels get pooled into a public feed and the algorithm can help your video go full-blown viral. At just 600 followers I had a video get over a million views, and gained 2,000 followers in a week!)
  • Know and define your audience – Instagram wants you to be found by people who relate to your content. You can help define your account by posting content that relates to a specific niche, including keywords or a few hashtags (not 30!) to simply associate buzzwords with your account. The algorithm then begins to categorize your account and shows it to people who have demonstrated interest in your niche.
Posts can gain momentum when a creator knows their audience and shows up for them consistently with educational and entertaining content. The more your content gets exposure, the more your account will grow, and the more you will learn what your followers want to see. Then the cycle continues as you fine-tune your content over time. – Jaeda Follow along with @timandjaeda for some fun adventures, tips and tricks!

Do not buy your followers

Yes, that is a thing, and no, you shouldn’t do it. Much like real life, fake friends and followers lower your credibility. If potential followers and customers come to an inactive Instagram page with thousands of followers, they’ll know the math ain’t mathin’. You need to build trust and long-lasting relationships to reel consumers in and make them want to stay. Buying followers defeats the purpose of trying to organically grow your feed. Real people who follow brands on Instagram follow them for a reason – they want to engage and potentially buy your product. They like what you’re posting and bring monetary value to your business. Users also enjoy when there’s someone on the other side responding to their questions and comments. Without them, there’s no ROI.

Follow relevant accounts

Find other brands with a similar audience base as you, then engage with their accounts publicly. Share their posts and add value to conversations with authentic comments. Doing this habitually will magnify your brand’s visibility, credibility and potentially your follower count. With that being said, following relevant accounts does not mean following competitors.

Social Media and Business Growth, a Dynamic Duo

Businesses need social media. Thankfully, Instagram and other social media networks are open to all, giving businesses of any size a chance to follow their consumers’ activities and attract more potential buyers. Overall, this helps markets be more informed about their target audience so that they can create a better marketing strategy to attract such customers. Social media can be scary, but we’re here to tell you it’s actually a fun way to connect with customers and build a culture they love. Our team is happy to answer questions and guide you through the process of growing your social media presence!
