Using Keywords to Further Your Mission

Table of Contents

Last week, we featured an interview with Tim Jennings, Soulheart’s resident search engine optimization (SEO) master. He gave us a brief introduction to the big ideas behind SEO. Today, we’ll learn about how it all works and give you the first three steps to SEO success – defining your mission and finding the keywords that will help you make it a reality.

1. Set Your Vision

We have some good news: The first step to SEO success doesn’t require that you know anything about SEO. You can be completely clueless as to what SEO means and still do this step successfully. In fact, it’s sometimes best to begin with a blank-slate because that will help you to be authentic to your brand – and authenticity matters. You won’t be distracted by the thought of rankings because you’ll be focused on what’s most important: the heart of your mission.

You should begin by creating a clear vision for your company, which includes two things:

1. Who you are

In the shortest number of words, how would you describe your company? For example, Soulheart is a digital marketing company.

2. What you believe

What is the belief that underlies what your company does? Soulheart believes that social media and web strategies are important to the success of a brand.

Who you are and what you believe come together to make a vision.

Soulheart is a digital marketing company that believes the best way have impact starts with a great web and social strategy.

2. Turn Your Vision into a Mission

The formula for finding your mission is pretty simple: vision + what you do = mission.

What you do

This is how you act on the belief you identified in the first step. How does your company respond to its own beliefs?

Soulheart builds and hosts websites. We also create and implement online marketing and content strategies.

Now, using the formula, we’ve got a mission.

Soulheart is a full-service creative agency that helps organizations have an impact by building + hosting beautiful websites and creating + implementing effective online marketing and content strategies.

3. Use Keywords to Further that Vision

Now that you’ve written out your mission, you can begin to hone in on the keywords that you want to rank for. When you find the right keywords, you’ll attract the right people (the people who will purchase your services or products!) to your website.

But first – what’s a keyword?

Keyword: a phrase that you want your webpage to be associated with it so that when people search for the phrase, your page will come up.

It’s what you want to be found for. Phrases from our mission become our first keywords. For example,

Soulheart is a full-service digital marketing company that helps organizations make a positive impact in the world through web hosting and development and analyzing and improving marketing strategy and content strategy.

If someone searches a creative agency, we want to be found. The same for web hosting, development, marketing strategy, and content strategy.

These keywords are the starting point to SEO success! However, if you Google digital marketing company, you get 2,530,000,000 results. How do you prove that you’re really the one in a when there are of 2.5 billion others out there?

You get specific with your keywords, which is what we’ll talk about next week.
