There are a lot of rumors in the SEO community about keyword density. At Soulheart, we have our own thoughts and opinions when we perform SEO work on  our clients’ websites.

Keyword density is how often you use your keyword in the content of your page. It is such a popular subject that different SEO tools like Yoast has a keyword density monitor and will give you suggestions on if you should use your keyword more or less.

The truth is, there is no magical number or ratio to how many times you should use the keyphrase. But there are ways to find out how many times it should be used in your industry for the specific content that you are producing.

Hello and welcome back to another episode of the Search Engine Tips and Tricks Podcast with Tim Jennings. I am your host, Tim, and I have been the head of SEO at Soulheart for over 8 years now. How Many Times Should You Use The Keyword?

In today’s episode, I want to answer a pretty common question that I get from people when they are trying to improve their SEO efforts. That question is “How often should I use my keyword?” And to be honest with you, the answer is one that is very common in the SEO community: It depends! Every niche will have a different answer to that question. But don’t get frustrated! Finding out the answer for your website is easy! It honestly should be one of the first things you do when creating a website or producing content on your website anyways.

Steps To Determine Keyword Frequency

Today’s tip is a quick one but to determine keyword frequency on your page, reverse engineer by analyzing how often top-ranking websites mention the keyword on their pages. To figure out how often you should mention your keyword on the page, the steps are fairly simple:
1. Open a new Google search
2. Enter your keyword and click search
3. Right Click on the first result that is not an ad and select open in a new tab
4. Repeat that process for the first 3 results
5. Go to the first result and search for the keyword. On a Mac, the keyboard shortcut is Command + F. On a PC, the shortcut is Control + F.
6. Take note of how many times it was used on the page.
7. Repeat that process for the rest of the tabs you have open.

Evaluating The Data

Once you do that, you should see a pattern. And many times, that pattern is shocking. Far too often I talk to people who use the keyword as often as possible. Maybe they don’t do what is called keyword stuffing – but they use it a lot. When I use this technique to find what Google is already rewarding, many times it comes back that they are only using it 3 or 4 times.

This tip is especially helpful for local businesses. Many local businesses don’t know how often they should mention their cities or locations in their content. This tip makes finding the answer to their questions quick and easy.

Remember: You should never “over-optimize” your content and just use your keyword as often as you can. Instead, find out what Google is already rewarding and match it.
